Canadian PM Trudeau Suggests Potential Shift in India-Canada Relations Amid US Indictment Fallout

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hinted at a potential change in India-Canada relations following a US indictment alleging a conspiracy to assassinate a Sikh separatist on American soil.

Trudeau acknowledged a possible "tonal shift" in India's stance, highlighting an emerging willingness to collaborate and move away from a confrontational approach.

Trudeau emphasized the need for a more cooperative approach between the two nations, indicating that merely launching attacks against Canada may not lead to resolving underlying issues. He expressed a desire to work towards finding a compromise, particularly focusing on Indo-Pacific cooperation and a strategy forward for Canada.

Stressing the importance of upholding rights, safety, and the rule of law, Trudeau reiterated Canada's commitment to stand firm for governance principles. However, he also expressed a desire to avoid prolonged tensions, emphasizing a willingness to find common ground for the betterment of both nations.

The strained relationship between India and Canada escalated after allegations linking the Indian government to the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada earlier this year. Nijjar, associated with the Khalistan Tiger Force, was fatally shot outside a Gurudwara in June. Canadian security agencies pursued leads of potential Indian government involvement, prompting strong denials from India and a temporary suspension of visa services. An inquiry committee has been established to investigate the allegations.
